RF components: Thin-film technology enables world’s smallest band pass filters with bottom terminals
TDK-EPC, a group company of TDK Corporation, presents the new TFSB series of TDK thin-film band pass filters, which with a footprint of 1.0 x 0.5 mm2 and an insertion height of just 0.3 mm are the world’s smallest*. Thanks to their innovative terminal configuration on their bottom surface the footprint of the low-profile 1005 components is about 50 percent less than for conventional filters. The new filters are designed for the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands, making them suitable for Bluetooth and WLAN applications in smartphones and other mobile phones. Mass production has started in September 2011.

Multilayer Technology Catching up to Wound Inductors
The increasingly multi-functional, high-level performance of electronic devices such as digital cameras, video cameras and laptop PCs is achieved through the use of ICs. Power is supplied to ICs from the DC-DC converter, which transforms the battery voltage into the IC’s drive voltage. However, variations in the power source voltage caused by switching at the DC-DC converter can spread to other circuits through the power source line as noise. Coils for decoupling are introduced into the power circuit as a preventative measure against this. Previously, the wound type coil was the most commonly used, but with the MLZ-H series, TDK has created a high-spec multilayer ferrite coil that threatens to overtake the wound coil. By employing our unique ferrite material and optimal layered structure we have vastly improved the rated current. We have also made it compatible with many circuits that were previously only compatible with the wound type coil.

Making a giant leap toward slimmer ferrite magnets
Magnet usage is considered a barometer of the maturity of industrial society. In recent years, rare-earth neodymium magnets have risen to the top of the market in terms of production value, but resource-abundant ferrite magnets continue to dominate the field in production volume. Thus, improving ferrite magnet performance can be the key to addressing many issues facing society as a whole, including energy-saving solutions, environmental concerns, and resource conservation. TDK has developed a new production method using FB12 material, which boasts some of the best properties in the world, to create a mass production technique for FB13B/FB14H high-performance thin-type anisotropic ferrite magnets that are only approximately 1.0 mm thick.

Extreme cold to searing heat, incessant exposure to strong vibrations and shocks, and many other adverse factors―electronic components in cars are subject to extremely harsh conditions and therefore need to provide much higher reliability than general- application products. Making full use of its rich store of advanced core technologies such as materials technology, multilayer technology, and sintering technology, TDK is offering a wide range of highly reliable multilayer ceramic chip capacitors for automotive use.

A new method for producing neodymium magnets that takes dysprosium-saving to the extreme
Since they were commercialized in 1983, neodymium magnets (sintered neodymium-iron-boron magnet, TDK product name: NEOREC) have maintained their position as the most powerful type of magnet known to industry. Demand for these magnets continues to grow in many fields, for example actuators that drive magnetic heads on hard disk drives, motors used in industrial equipment and energy-saving appliances, and more recently in the drive motors used in HEVs and EVs
